Each word in a sentence has a function. When put in the correct order, the words carry out their function, and the sentence makes sense.
Example: The children play.
This is a basic sentence, otherwise known as a simple sentence. Simple sentences have at least one noun and one verb. Nouns and verbs are classified as parts of speech.

Understanding parts of speech aids in not only formation of sentences but helps students to enhance their written and spoken communication and improves reading ability. Let’s look at the basic sentence again.

We can use this basic sentence and build on it by adding another part of speech, such as an adjective. An adjective is a word that describes the noun in a sentence, telling us more about it. Let’s say more about the children in the sentence:

Here we see the function of the adjective ‘noisy’. Placed in it’s correct order, it tells us more about the children. The sentence is clear and makes sense. We are able to comprehend what is being told. By using the adjective ‘noisy’ to describe the children, sound is added and we begin to get an even clearer picture of what we read.
We can now build on the idea of this sentence by making another sentence. To do this, we will use a pronoun, more nouns and prepositions.

Now we have visual—the swings, the park. Setting is created. In just two sentences, by effectively using parts of speech, we have already created a mental picture to help students understand what they read.
